- GROW'EM, version 4.0
- Copyright (c) 1996, Paul Postuma
- all rights reserved
-
-
- Grow'Em is a compendium of information dealing with the propagation of
- various plant species. It is being distributed as shareware, and as such,
- please feel free to copy the unregistered version of this program and send it
- to family, friends, colleagues, complete with its accompanying files in its
- unmodified form, free of charge. Distribution fees may not exceed $5.
-
- GROW'EM is copyrighted. It belows wholly to the author, and may not be
- modified except with express permission, given in writing.
-
- Version 4.0 expands significantly on the previous versions. Entirely new
- sections on various topics have been added, the original text has been
- expanded and information on about 1000 entries is now available. The
- graphics have been redigitized, for both VGA and SVGA versions.
-
- As before, the shareware program is in look, feel and function identical to
- the registered version. However, the shareware version contains specific
- growing information on far fewer species, and uses fewer of the images than
- the registered version.
-
-
- System Requirements:
-
- XT or above, IBM PC or compatible computer
- VGA card or better (640 x 480 x 256 colour support for SVGA version)
- 640 KB RAM
- hard drive with at least 3 MB free
- MS-DOS, PC-DOS, DR-DOS or Novell DOS 3.1 or up
-
-
- Running the Program:
-
- To run either program, simply type GROW from the directory in which the
- program resides. All subsequent actions may be selected by mouse or by
- pressing the underlined letter, or first letter, of a selection. See
- README for installation instructions.
-
- Only the "Find" function requires a little elaboration. If a plant or pest
- is not found while scrolling through the text, it may still be present but
- listed under a different name; I've tried to provide commonly used
- alternatives and these are still located using the "Find" function. Try
- various spellings if uncertain, or shorten the search string.
-
- For example, Philodendron pertusum is not found with the other Philodendrons,
- but is rather listed by its more common name of Monstera deliciosa. Using
- the Find function and entering "Philodendron pertusum" will still take you
- directly to this plant.
-
- Searching for a shortened versions of a name is recommended, however: using
- the Find function repeatedly with the letters "Philo" will turn up each
- Philodendron in the database. Using the letters "Parlo" will turn up both
- the parlour palm and the parlour ivy, and saves you worrying about spelling,
- or possible hyphenations. Using "pertusum" works equally well, and avoids
- the possibility of an abbreviated genus name, i.e., it would locate P.
- pertusum, if anywhere in the text.
-
- To use find repeatedly, simply select Find again, then either click the
- mouse on "Find Next", or hold down ALT and N keys simultaneously.
- hyphenations, and/or pluralizations.
-
- At other times, a plant may be indexed in a different database, i.e. an
- apple tree under Fruits & Vegetables, but not under Trees and Shrubs.
- Such plants are cross-referenced at the end of each section, and again,
- the Find function will locate them.
-
- To find the next occurrence of a name with the Find function, use the
- Alt-F key combination, or select "Next" using the mouse.
-
- Note that entering words such as "shade", "moist", and "clay" can turn up
- plants that do well in those areas. Just use Find repeatedly to locate
- all entries containing these words.
-
-
- Running under Windows:
-
- Grow'Em has been tested with, and runs quite nicely as Windows or Windows 95
- application. However, problems may arise if a 256-colour version of
- Grow'Em is run in 16-colour Windows mode. Adjust your Windows mode or
- use a 16-colour version of the Grow'Em program.
-
- Some keyboard shortcuts can corrupt the program screen. This may or
- may not be corrected by pressing the ALT and ENTER keys simultaneously;
- if the screen isn't restored, exit Grow'Em and start over.
-
-
- SVGA support:
-
- The SVGA versions of Grow'Em should work with pretty much all SVGA cards,
- though some older cards may not be perfectly supported. If you have any
- problems, load the card's VESA driver and try again. If you still have
- problems, call or write me, with the name of your system and SVGA card if
- possible - we can usually resolve the problem fairly easily.
-
-
- About shareware:
-
- GROW'EM is shareware. Registered users - thank you for your support! If
- you're playing with an unregistered copy of the program, explore it, enjoy it.
- However, if you continue to use the program after a trial period of 30 days,
- and haven't already registered, please do so. For only $21.95 (Canadian or
- U.S. dollars), you'll receive the latest registered version available.
-
- Shareware distributors charge for the costs of distribution only. Any
- payment made to these people does not constitute payment of the registration
- fee. Their fee basically covers their cost in materials, shipping and
- handling, and is quite fair for providing you with quality try-before-you-
- buy software. But if you like what you see, please register.
-
- Registration confers tangible benefits. You receive the registered version,
- as described above, with much more of everything! You'll be immediately
- notified of all program updates, and these will be available to you for only
- $5.00 U.S. or Canadian. Finally, you'll know you have done the right thing.
- You ensure that small-town programmers like myself will continue to produce
- quality, affordable software. Without your support, we cannot survive.
-
- So, if you haven't already registered, print out the document ORDER.FRM
- that's part of this package, and send it in, along with a cheque in either
- Canadian or U.S. dollars. Register via the SWREG forum on Compuserve,
- contact the Public software Library with your VISA, MasterCard, American
- Express, or Discover Card (see below), or register online and download the
- registered version through Albert's Ambry, at www.alberts.com.
-
- The program *MUST* be registered if used commercially, on a per user basis.
- Site licenses are available, and multiple copies may be registered at reduced
- rate. Please contact me at the address below.
-
- Again, I thank all registered users for their support of this program. The
- most recent copy of the program is available to you for only $5. Please
- contact the author at the address below.
-
- This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
- Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle
- works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem with
- an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help.
- The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP
- member, but does not provide technical support for members' products. Please
- write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442-9427, USA,
- FAX 616-788-2765 or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe Mail to ASP
- Ombudsman 70007,3536.
